A GIF’s size is decided by four settings, and this video changes them one at a time from the same baseline so you can see what each costs. On the same two and a half seconds of a French bulldog: the defaults (480 px, 12 fps, 128 colours, dither) come to 1.3 MB; 320 px wide is 627 KB, because a GIF grows with its area; 8 fps is 921 KB; 32 colours is 817 KB; and turning dither off is 1.0 MB. Then three real jobs. A Discord emoji, square and under 256 KB, where the tool’s Fit under setting does the maths and reports what it chose — 144 px, 12 fps, 64 colours, 255 KB. A boomerang reaction for a group chat, and a captioned meme. The rule of thumb at the end: cut width first, then frame rate, then colours, and let Fit under handle any hard limit. Everything runs in your browser, so the video is never uploaded.

And the meme. A top caption, a bottom caption, and the size — burned straight into every frame, so it reads the same wherever it is posted.
So. To make it smaller, cut the width first, then the frame rate, then the colours. If a site has a hard limit, use Fit under and let it choose. Flat graphics: fewer colours, no dither. Anything that loops: boomerang.
