Edit real text in a PDF
Most “PDF editors” only let you stick a new text box on top. This one lets you click the existing text and replace it — on export the original glyphs are removed and your new text is drawn in their place, so the change is real, not an overlay.
Text editing works on digital PDFs that have a text layer. If your document is a scan, run text recognition first and the recognized words become editable and searchable.
True redaction that actually removes data
A black rectangle drawn over text is not redaction — the words underneath are still selectable and can be copied straight out of the file. Our editor removes the marked content from the page’s content stream, so redacted text and graphics are physically gone from the exported PDF and cannot be recovered.
Redact manually by dragging over an area, or let the built-in scanner find emails, phone numbers, SSNs, credit-card numbers, IPs and IBANs and redact them in one click.
Text recognition for scanned documents
Scanned PDFs are just images, so their text can’t be selected, searched or edited. Built-in text recognition reads the words (nothing is sent anywhere), unlocking search, redaction and a searchable text layer that’s embedded into the file you download.
Runs on your device, not our servers
Every action — rendering, editing, text recognition, redaction and saving — happens on your own device. Because your PDF never touches a server, there’s nothing to intercept, cache or leak, and the tool keeps working even offline once the page has loaded.
Edit existing text in a PDF in its own font
Open a PDF, choose Edit text and click the words you want to change. The tutorial fixes an invoice this way: a price goes from €4.60 to €4.40 and the total from €920.00 to €880.00, and each replacement keeps the document's own font, size and position, so the corrected line looks as if it was always there. For anything that is not on the page yet, the Text tool adds a new line wherever you click.
What makes it useful is what happens in the saved file. Many PDF editors draw a white box over the old words and type on top; here the text itself is replaced. Copy the text out of the downloaded PDF and it reads €4.40 — the old €4.60 is gone, so search, copy and screen readers all see the new words. The PDF stays on your device the whole time.
- Edit text: click any text in the PDF and retype it
- The replacement keeps the original font, size and position
- Text: add a new line anywhere on the page
- The saved file's text really changes — the old value is gone, not hidden
Highlight, comment and draw on a PDF
Mark up a PDF the way you would on paper. Choose Highlight, Strikethrough or Underline and drag along the words: the mark snaps to the text, so it covers exactly the words you meant. Comment places a sticky note — click where it belongs and type your question. When words are not enough, Draw lets you circle something freehand, in any of 7 colours.
When you download the file, every mark is drawn onto the page, so it looks the same in any PDF reader and it prints, and the words you typed in a note are kept in the file. That makes it a quick way to check a quote, review a contract or correct homework without an account or an upload: the PDF is read and changed in your browser.
- Highlight, Strikethrough and Underline snap to the words
- Comment: a sticky note — click, then type
- Draw: freehand marks in 7 colours
- Marks are drawn onto the page, so they look the same everywhere and print
Add shapes, an Approved stamp and links to a PDF
Part of getting a PDF ready to send back is pointing at things. Pick Box or Ellipse and drag to draw around a line item, or use Arrow and Line to point straight at a field. Each shape is drawn by dragging on the page, exactly where you want it.
Stamps record a decision in one click: choose Approved, Draft, Confidential or Void and drop it on the page. To send readers somewhere, choose Hyperlink, type the web address and drag over the words that should carry it. In the saved file the link is a real one, clickable in any PDF reader — not a picture of a link. A quote to approve, a form to point at, a catalogue to link to: all of it is done in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
- Box and Ellipse: drag to draw
- Arrow and Line to point at a detail
- Stamps: Approved, Draft, Confidential, Void
- Hyperlink: type the address, drag over the words — a real link in the saved file
Add a logo or replace a photo in a PDF
The Image tool adds a picture from your device — a logo, for example — and lets you drag it into place and size it on the page. To change a picture that is already in the PDF, choose Edit image and click any photo: you can replace it with a new one, rotate or flip it, turn it black and white with Grayscale, or change its opacity. With Pro you can also remove an image's background.
This is the fix for a brochure that still shows last year's photo or a document missing its logo, without going back to the file it was made from. In the tutorial the cover photo is replaced and turned black and white, and the saved PDF shows the new photo in black and white. The images are changed on your device; nothing is uploaded.
- Image: add a picture from your device, then move and resize it
- Edit image: click any photo already in the PDF
- Replace, rotate, flip, Grayscale and opacity
- Pro: remove an image's background
Fill in a PDF form online without printing it
Choose Fill form and every field in the PDF lights up, so you can see at a glance what needs answering. Click a field and type, tick the boxes, and add a note where you need one. Order forms, applications and registration sheets can all be completed this way, with no printer, no scanner and no account.
Some forms only have boxes printed on the page, with no field behind them, so there is nothing to click. For those, the Checkbox tool puts a tick anywhere you place it. When you download the file, every value you typed and every tick is on the page, ready to send back. The form is filled in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
- Fill form: every field lights up — click and type
- Tick the form's boxes and add a note
- Checkbox: a tick on a box that is only printed
- The saved file shows every value and every tick
Sign a PDF with your signature, name and date
Signing a PDF does not need a printer or a scanner. Pick Draw, choose blue and sign on the line with a mouse, a finger or a pen. Then use Text to add your name and the date next to it. In the saved file the signature, the name and the date are all on the page — free, for an order form, a lease or a permission slip.
If you sign documents often, Pro adds Sign: you draw your signature once, or type it in a handwriting style, and it is kept so you can place it again in one click instead of drawing it every time. Either way, the document is signed in your browser, nothing is uploaded and the file never leaves your device.
- Draw: sign on the line in blue with a mouse, finger or pen — free
- Text: add your name and the date
- Pro: Sign keeps a drawn or typed signature to place in one click
- Signature, name and date are on the page in the saved file
Merge, delete, rotate, reorder and split PDF pages
The Pages panel organises the document. Merge brings another PDF in, inserted after the page you are on. Delete removes a page you do not need, dragging a page moves it to a new position, Rotate turns a sideways scan upright, and Blank adds an empty page for notes.
When the file is too big to send in one piece, or really should be two documents, use Split when you download: in the tutorial the file is cut after page 4. Each resulting file has exactly the pages you see, in the order you see them, turned the same way. A guide missing its ticket, a scan that came in sideways, a file that needs dividing — the Pages panel and Split fix all of it in your browser, without the file leaving your device.
- Merge: insert another PDF after the current page
- Delete a page, or drag a page to move it
- Rotate a sideways page and add a Blank page
- Split on download, for example after page 4
- Each file keeps the pages, order and rotation you see
Add a watermark, header and page numbers to a PDF
Watermark puts text such as DRAFT, or a picture such as your logo, across every page. Set its opacity to make it more or less see-through, set its angle and placement, and keep it off the cover — or decide page by page. A draft then cannot be mistaken for the final version.
Header & footer adds a title and page numbers in one step. Type tokens instead of numbers: {page} and {pages} become "Page 2 of 6" on the second page of a six-page file, and {date} inserts the date. In the tutorial the saved file has DRAFT and the numbered footer on every page except the cover. A report that needs page numbers before it is printed takes a few clicks in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
- Watermark: text or a picture
- Opacity, angle and placement
- Skip the cover, or set it page by page
- Header & footer with {page}, {pages} and {date}
Edit PDF properties, attach files and compare two PDFs
A PDF carries more than its pages. Document properties shows what a file says about itself — the tutorial's quote still named the person who made it — and lets you change the title, author, subject and keywords, then save. Attachments puts a file inside the PDF; in the tutorial a spreadsheet travels inside the quote, and the saved file has both the new author and the attachment.
Compare checks two versions of a PDF and marks every word that changed, so you can see exactly what was edited between drafts. With Pro, the editor also offers search and replace, reading scanned pages, and finding sensitive details to redact. All of it runs in your browser, without the file leaving your device.
- Document properties: read and change title, author, subject, keywords
- Attachments: put any file inside the PDF
- Compare: two versions, word by word
- Pro: search and replace, scanned pages, sensitive-info redaction

Frequently asked questions
Can I edit existing text in a PDF?
Yes. Pick the Edit Text tool and click any text in a digital (non-scanned) PDF to change it. On export, the original text is truly replaced, not just covered. For scanned PDFs, run text recognition first to make the text editable.
Is the PDF editor really free to use?
Yes. Every editing feature — text, markup, signatures, redaction and text recognition — is available at no cost, with no watermark added to your document.
How does redaction work — is it secure?
Redaction truly removes the underlying text and vector content from the page (via a built-in engine), not just paints a black box over it. The redacted data cannot be copied or recovered from the exported file.
Can I edit scanned PDFs?
Scanned PDFs are images with no selectable text. Run text recognition (Tools → Text recognition → All pages) to recognize the text; afterwards you can search, redact and add a searchable text layer, and the exported PDF becomes searchable.
Can I add a signature to a PDF?
Yes. Use the Sign tool to draw your signature, then place and resize it anywhere on the page. You can also insert image signatures.
Can I detect and remove sensitive information?
Yes. The Tools panel scans for emails, phone numbers, SSNs, credit-card numbers, IPs and IBANs, lists what it finds, and lets you redact selected or all matches in one click — with true removal on download.
Will my edited PDF stay searchable?
Yes. Native text remains searchable, and any pages you run text recognition on get an invisible, selectable text layer embedded on export (redacted regions are excluded so nothing sensitive leaks).
Do I need to install anything?
No. It works on any modern device — desktop or mobile — with no install, sign-up, or plugins. It also works offline once loaded.
