Why View Video Metadata?

Knowing a video's duration, resolution, and file size helps you decide how to edit, compress, or share it. This tool shows that info instantly in your browser—no upload, no account, and no data sent to any server.

Benefits

  • Instant: Select a file and see duration, resolution, aspect ratio, and file size right away
  • Private: Everything runs in your browser; your video never leaves your device
  • No sign-up: No registration or login required
  • Wide format support: Works with MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV, and other common video types

Use Cases

Common ways to use video metadata:

When to Check Metadata

  • Before editing: Confirm resolution and duration before importing into an editor
  • Before uploading: Check file size and specs to meet platform limits (e.g. social or streaming)
  • After export: Verify that an exported video has the expected resolution and length
  • Quick reference: Identify unknown files by resolution, duration, and MIME type

How Video Metadata Works

The tool uses your browser's built-in video support to open the file and read its properties. Duration, width, height, and (when available) bitrate come from the loaded video element; file size and name come from the file object. No server is involved.

What You See

  • Duration: Total length in minutes:seconds and seconds
  • Resolution: Width Ă— height in pixels
  • Aspect ratio: Width divided by height (e.g. 1.78 : 1 for 16:9)
  • File size & type: Size in B/KB/MB/GB and MIME type (e.g. video/mp4)
  • Bitrate: Video and audio bitrate when the browser exposes them

Powered by browser video APIs and optimized processing algorithms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What metadata is shown?

Duration, resolution (width Ă— height), aspect ratio, file size, file name, and MIME type. When available from the browser, video and audio bitrate are also displayed. All values are read from your file in the browser.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is only loaded in your browser for playback and reading metadata. Nothing is sent to any server.

Why does preview sometimes not show?

Some formats or codecs are not playable in every browser. If the preview fails, the tool still tries to read metadata. You can remove the file and try another, or use a different browser.

Which video formats are supported?

Common formats such as MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, MKV, M4V, OGV, 3GP, WMV, and FLV are accepted. Support depends on your browser; Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge handle most of these.

Can I edit or change metadata with this tool?

No. This tool only displays metadata. To change title, description, or other tags, use a dedicated metadata editor or video conversion tool.
