A PDF that opens sideways is not a broken file — it is a file whose pages were recorded the wrong way up, usually by a scanner that took the sheet in landscape, or by a report that mixes a portrait write-up with a landscape chart. Turning every page is the easy case and rarely the one you have. A duplex scan comes back with every other sheet upside down. A report has three landscape charts buried in forty portrait pages. A contract has one signature page that was photographed sideways. Each of those is a different selection, and picking the right one is the difference between four clicks and forty.

The six ways to choose

• All: every page in the document. The right choice when the whole file was fed in the wrong way.
• Odd: pages 1, 3, 5 and so on. Half of every duplex scan that came out alternating.
• Even: pages 2, 4, 6 and so on — the other half.
• Portrait: every page that is currently taller than it is wide, wherever it sits.
• Landscape: every page that is currently wider than it is tall. This reads the page as you SEE it, so a portrait sheet that carries a quarter turn counts as landscape, which is exactly what you meant.
• Range: a typed list such as 1-3, 7, 10-12. Commas, spaces and dashes all work, and a page number the document does not have is flagged rather than quietly ignored.

Whatever you pick, the pages in the selection are outlined in the grid before you turn anything, so you can see that Odd really did mean the pages you were thinking of. Then Turn left, Turn right and 180 degrees move the whole selection at once, and clicking a single thumbnail still turns just that page.

A scanner that takes a sheet the wrong way round does not usually rotate the image. It records the picture as it captured it and writes the correction into the page itself — so the page carries a quarter or half turn that every reader dutifully applies, and the document opens sideways on every machine you try. It looks like a broken file and it is a one-number problem.

What the one-press fix does

• Finds them: every page carrying a turn of its own is detected by reading the document, with nothing rendered — instant even on a hundred pages
• Counts them first: the button says how many pages it will change before you press it, so it is never a surprise
• Cancels the turn: each affected page gets exactly the correction that brings it back upright, which is not the same angle for all of them
• Leaves the rest alone: pages that were already upright are untouched, so a document that is fine reports zero and the button stays out of your way

Rotating a page can mean two different things and most tools only offer one of them. The difference matters the moment the document has to be printed, and it is the reason a page can look correct in one reader and shifted in another.

The two modes

• Turn the page: the sheet itself changes orientation, so a portrait page becomes a landscape page. This is what every other online rotate tool does, and it is the right default for reading on screen.
• Keep the paper size: the sheet stays exactly the size it was and the content turns inside it. Use this when the document has to print on the paper it was laid out for — a landscape chart dropped into a portrait report, for instance.

Where the content sits

Turned content does not fill a sheet of the other shape, so keeping the paper size leaves a margin, and you get to say where it goes: top, centre or bottom. The page grid shows the result immediately, including the margin, so choosing between them is a matter of looking rather than of guessing and re-exporting.

Inside a PDF, every page carries a rectangle that says how big it is and a single number that says how far a reader should turn it before drawing. Rotating a page changes that number — nothing else. The text, the vector drawings and the images underneath are left exactly as they were, which is why a turn is instant on a hundred pages and why the file size barely moves.

Rotation Options

• Turn right: 90 degrees clockwise, the usual fix for a page recorded upside-down-left
• Turn left: 90 degrees anticlockwise
• 180 degrees: a half turn, for a sheet that went in the wrong way up
• Reset: puts the selection back to its original orientation without reloading the file
• Always normalised: every stored angle is 0, 90, 180 or 270, so four turns really is a full circle

Quality Considerations

• Look at the outlined pages before turning — the grid shows the selection, so Odd meaning what you think it means is checkable rather than assumable
• Try Fix sideways pages first on any scan; if it reports zero, the problem is the image and not the page record
• Use Keep the paper size only when the document has to print on its original sheet — otherwise Turn the page is what readers expect
• Give the output a name that says what changed, so the original and the corrected copy are not two identical filenames in a downloads folder
• Keep the original until you have opened the result; a turn is cheap to redo and impossible to undo from a file you deleted
