Resize Image to 1MB
A 1 MB limit is a large-photo problem: phone and camera images are often 3–12 MB, and many forms, email services and websites take no more than 1 MB per file. This preset gets under the limit while keeping the picture looking like the original.

Target size picks the quality for you and never goes over the limit you set.
The result is never larger than this. If a size cannot be reached by quality alone, the image is scaled down to fit.

Under 1 MB without looking compressed
1 MB is a generous budget — enough for a JPG of roughly 3–5 megapixels at high quality, which fills any screen. Getting a 12-megapixel photo there usually needs only a modest quality reduction, sometimes with a small scale-down, and you will struggle to tell the result from the original at normal viewing sizes. The preset aims just under 1,000,000 bytes (976 KB), so the file passes whether a site counts a megabyte as 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes.
Getting under 1 MB
- Drop the photo here — JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF. An iPhone HEIC photo needs converting to JPG first.
- The target is already 976 KB with JPG output, so the result is under 1 MB by either definition.
- Download and check the size; the final pixel dimensions are shown with the result.
What happens to the photo
- Most photos reach 1 MB at a high quality setting with no visible difference on screen.
- Very detailed scenes — foliage, gravel, crowds — may be scaled down slightly; the result shows the final size.
- Screenshots and graphics saved as PNG usually shrink a lot as JPG, but sharp text edges can pick up faint halos. The main compressor can keep PNG or use WebP if that matters.
Where a 1 MB limit usually appears
- Application and registration forms that cap photo uploads at 1 MB.
- Websites, forums and media libraries with a 1 MB upload limit.
- Email and chat, where several 1 MB photos go through when full-size ones bounce or get recompressed.
Why this page writes JPG
JPG is used because every site that takes a 1 MB photo accepts it, and at this budget its quality is indistinguishable from the original for normal viewing. If the destination accepts WebP or AVIF, the main compressor can go smaller still.
How the 1 MB preset works
- Target: 976 KB (999,424 bytes) — under 1 MB whether a site means 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes.
- Quality first, pixels second: the photo is reduced in dimensions only if a high-quality JPG cannot fit.
- Limit is 2 MB or 500 KB instead? Type that number in the target box — the preset is only a starting point.

FAQ
Why does the target say 976 KB instead of 1 MB?
Because sites disagree about what a megabyte is. Some count 1,048,576 bytes, others 1,000,000. 976 KB is 999,424 bytes, which is under both, so the file passes either check. If you know your site uses the larger figure, you can type 1024 in the target box.
Will my photo lose quality?
Technically a little, visibly almost never. At 1 MB the encoder can use a high quality setting on a photo of several megapixels, and the difference from the original only shows if you compare the two zoomed in side by side.
Can I resize an iPhone HEIC photo to 1 MB?
Convert it first. The HEIC to JPG converter keeps the date and camera details and can limit the longest edge; bring the JPG here if it is still over 1 MB.
Will the photo keep its original dimensions?
Often, or close to it. The tool lowers quality first and reduces the dimensions only when a high-quality JPG cannot fit under the limit. The final width and height are shown next to the result.
Can I do several photos at once?
Free compresses one photo at a time. Pro takes a batch and downloads the results as a single ZIP.
