Sepia, Duotone and Colour Tinting: How to Tone a Black and White Photo
Toning gives a monochrome photo a colour cast — sepia, cyanotype, brand duotone. What each tone signals, how to pick one, and why it is not colourisation.

Toning means mapping a greyscale image onto a colour so the shadows, midtones and highlights all carry a single cast. It is what makes an old photograph read as *old* rather than merely grey, and it is one of the cheapest ways to make a mixed set of images look like they belong together. It is also frequently confused with colourisation, which is a completely different operation — worth separating up front so you know which one you actually want.
Toning is not colourisation
| Toning | Colourisation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Applies one colour cast across the whole image | Assigns different plausible colours per object |
| Grass and sky become | Both the same hue, different brightness | Green and blue respectively |
| How it works | A direct mapping of grey values to a colour | A model predicting what colour things were |
| Is it accurate? | Not trying to be — it is a look | A guess, sometimes convincing, sometimes wrong |
Our image filters do toning — black and white, sepia and split toning. If what you want is a 1940s family photograph rendered with green grass and a blue sky, that is colourisation, and the photo colorizer is the tool for it. But for a great deal of what people reach for, toning is genuinely what they wanted: a period feel, a consistent look across a set, or a photograph that matches a brand palette.
What each tone signals
- Sepia — warm brown. Reads as archival and nostalgic because early prints genuinely faded this way. The default for anything meant to feel historical.
- Cyanotype — deep blue. Blueprints and early photographic prints. Feels technical, cold, architectural.
- Selenium — cool purple-grey, very subtle. The fine-art print look; adds depth without announcing itself.
- Brand duotone — your own two colours. Instantly makes a set of stock or user-supplied photos look designed rather than assembled.
- Warm neutral — a barely-there cream cast. Takes the clinical edge off pure greyscale on a white page.
The practical rule: strong tones are a statement and should be used deliberately and consistently, not sprinkled across a few images. Subtle tones are safe almost everywhere and are what most professional monochrome work actually uses — pure neutral grey is rarer in print than people assume.
Getting a good result
Fix the contrast before you tone
Toning maps grey values to colour, so it inherits whatever tonal range you feed it. A flat, grey original tones to a flat, muddy result. Run Auto levels in the image enhancer first so the image has proper blacks and whites.
Convert to greyscale first if the source is colour
Applying a tint over an image that still has its own colours produces a muddled mix rather than a clean duotone. Strip to greyscale, then tone.
Pick the tone
In the image filters, open Advanced, set Black & white to 100% under Toning and add Sepia to taste, or use Split toning for a two-colour look.
Check it on a real background
A tone that looks elegant on a white editor canvas can look muddy on a dark page. View it where it will live before committing.

Tone a photoWhere toning earns its place
Mixed-source galleries. A team page where headshots were taken by six different people in six different rooms is the classic case. Convert to monochrome, apply one tone, and the inconsistency in lighting and background colour largely disappears.
Text over image. A toned image has a narrower, more predictable colour range than a full-colour photograph, which makes it far easier to place readable text over. This is why so many hero sections and poster designs use a duotone treatment.
Historical and archival material. Sepia does not make a photograph older, but it does signal age, which is useful for museum captions, family history pages and period design work.
Deliberate de-emphasis. Toning a background image pushes it back so foreground content can come forward. It is a compositional tool as much as an aesthetic one.
Saving the result
A toned photograph is still photographic content — smooth gradients, no hard edges — so JPG or WebP is the right output, not PNG. One caveat: single-hue images can show visible banding in large flat areas such as skies, because the whole picture now occupies a narrow slice of the colour space. If you see stepping, export at a higher quality setting rather than adding grain to hide it.
Keep the untoned original. Tones date faster than photographs do, brand colours change, and re-toning from a clean greyscale takes seconds while removing a tone cleanly does not really work at all.
If you want more control than a single cast — different colours in the shadows and the highlights, say — that is split toning, and the colour grading tool's shadow, midtone and highlight colour wheels are the right place for it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between toning and colourising a photo?
Toning applies one colour cast across the whole image, so grass and sky end up the same hue at different brightness. Colourisation assigns different plausible colours to different objects using a predictive model. Toning is a deliberate look; colourisation is an attempt at reconstruction.
How do I make a sepia photo online?
Convert the image to greyscale, set its contrast so it has proper blacks and whites, then apply a warm brown tone. Doing it in that order matters — toning a flat original produces a muddy result no tone can rescue.
What is a duotone image?
A monochrome image mapped onto two colours, typically one for the shadows and one for the highlights. It is widely used in branding because it makes photographs from many different sources look like a single consistent set.
Why does my toned image look banded?
A single-hue image occupies a narrow slice of the colour space, so smooth gradients such as skies have fewer distinct values to work with and can step visibly. Export at a higher quality setting, and avoid re-compressing the toned file repeatedly.
